We’ve all experienced this at least a few times. Someone puts a sweating glass of water or some other beverage on your beautiful maple end table only to leave a ghostly white ring on it. Sure, a stack of coasters was sitting right there, but accidents happen. Now, you’re left with the problem of how to get rid of the water stain in your wood furniture. The good news is that you can most likely get rid of the water stain without having to refinish your furniture.

Most of these methods will work for other kinds of stains, but in some cases you may need to use heavier-duty methods and materials to remove dark stains like grease from wood furniture.

Here are eight ways to tackle the problem, most of which can be done with basic household items from your pantry or even the fridge.

Get those white marks—caused by hot cups or sweating glasses—off your coffee table or other wooden furniture by making a paste of 1 tablespoon baking soda and 1 teaspoon water. Gently rub the spot in a circular motion until it disappears. Remember not to use too much water. You can also use a few drops of vinegar instead of water.

That’s not a typo. You can use mayonnaise to wipe away those ugly water stains in your wood. Be sure to clean the area of dust and dirt first. Then, using a cloth, dip it into the mayo and spread a think layer of it over the stain. Let it sit for about an hour. Then, come back and wipe if off. Use a clean, dry cloth to wipe away any remaining oil residue. It’s a good idea to apply a regular wood clean once you’ve dealt with the stain.

To get rid of those telltale watermark rings left by sweating beverages, gently rub some non-gel toothpaste with a soft cloth on the surface to remove water stains from wood. Then wipe it off with a damp cloth and let it dry before applying furniture polish. For even stronger cleaning power, mix equal parts white toothpaste and baking soda. Rub the paste parallel to the wood grain, wipe it off, and then polish with lemon oil.

How To Clean Water Stains With an Iron

Here’s one we found on TikTok that seems to be a decent way to remove water stains: use a steam iron, like the kind your use to get the wrinkles out of your clothing.

Use an empty iron, with no water in its tank, on the lowest possible setting. Next, get a damp cloth—you just want a bit of moisture—cover the water mark it and press the iron over the cloth. Keep the cloth over the stain and iron it repeatedly until you see the spot is gone. That’s it.
