Choosing Laundry Room Tile
Tile in your laundry room makes practical sense because it’s waterproof and durable. And with the endless color and style options, it’s also a great way to jazz up the space.
We talked to interior designer Tasha Schultz for her guidance on how to choose the best tile for your laundry room.

“I think laundry rooms are often overlooked when designing,” says Schultz. “They are the workhorses of homes and can really be beautiful spaces. Don’t be afraid to have fun with the tile selections in a laundry room.”
Sometimes simple is best
Although we love patterned tile, Schultz says it might not stand the test of time aesthetically. “I tend to shy away from printed patterns on tile,” says Schultz, “They date quickly and are very ‘on trend.’ I love using a mosaic, or something simple and timeless.”
Consider vintage tile
If you’re thinking about using a salvaged tile in your laundry room, Schultz says, “Go for it! Just make sure you have a good waste margin calculated in. Sometimes vintage tiles are a little more brittle. The laundry room is a great place to use unexpected tile.”

The penny tile is the same color as the wall for a seamless blend while creating lovely texture and interest. A backsplash isn’t always necessary, but if you have a laundry room sink, it’s a good idea to protect the wall.

Classic Elegance

The graphic black-and-white tile in this laundry room by @melissalenoxdesign is cement tile (aka encaustic tile). An extremely durable material, it dates back to the 1800s. It’s also an environmentally friendly choice.
According to the Cement Tile Shop, “Cement tiles are colored with natural pigments and do not give off any fumes at all. Cement tiles are completely handmade and never have to be fired in a kiln, which means that the amount of energy used in the manufacturing process is very low.”

Focus On the Floor
Don’t be afraid to take a risk when choosing tile for your floor. A patterned floor, like this one from @creating.elegance, makes your laundry room truly stand out.
A busy floor pattern works best with simple cabinetry and plain walls, so the space doesn’t feel overwhelming. Pattern on the floor also camouflages dirt and scuff marks!

Peel-and-Stick Tile
Peel and stick tile is a great choice if you’re working with a tight budget, and it’s so easy to install.
In this video, @angelamariemade quickly creates a backsplash with taupe-colored peel-and-stick. Once on the wall, the sheets look like real tile, and are surprisingly chic. All you need is a razor knife and straightedge to cut the tile sheets as needed, then peel and stick!

DIY Friendly
Here’s another DIY-friendly way to install tile, using an adhesive tile mat. Instead of messy mortar, simply attach the mat to the wall, then stick on your tile. The extra strong adhesive keeps the tile in place. Then you can finish with grout like you would a regular tile job.
