Once you’ve got your greenhouse shell up, now it’s time to organize it. Shelving might seem straightforward, but there’s actually a lot of options to consider, including how to give plants optimal access to light.

Pre-made shelves are convenient and can often handle heavy loads, which is great if you have a lot of plants. But DIY builds give you the chance to play with custom heights, shapes and materials that fit your space and plant types just right. Plus, they can be made from upcycled materials like old ladders, crates or pallets, which saves money and adds a unique touch, says Manny Barra, a master gardener at TeachMe.To.

“Building also allows you to add special touches like pull-out trays or adjustable diy greenhouse shelves for plants at different growth stages,” he says. “Whether you go with a store-bought option or build something yourself, good shelving can transform a greenhouse from a simple plant house to a stunning, organized sanctuary for your plants.”

Wire Mesh Greenhouse Shelving

These greenhouse shelves by @modernminihomestead are framed with wood, and each tier is topped with hardware cloth (aka galvanized steel wire mesh). The wire mesh allows the sun to shine through and reach all the plants and keeps soil and water from puddling on the shelves.

Heavy-duty staples secure the mesh to the wood, and the multiple wood supports on each shelf prevent sagging. And there’s another chandelier! Who said greenhouses can’t be fancy?

FAQ

Is it a better idea to buy or build greenhouse shelving?

It depends on your time, budget, aesthetic preference, skill set and the local availability of materials. A ready-made metal shelving unit may be all you need, but building your own can help you make the most of your space.

You can also find a happy medium, says Katie Russo, content operations manager at Bootstrap Farmer. “Build your own simple shelves along the length of your greenhouse to hold seedlings and plant starts. Then, add a sturdy metal shelf to hold tropical and fragile plants in larger pots that will live in the space year-round.”

Are greenhouses expensive to keep warm?

They can be, depending on your climate and how warm you want it to stay. To keep costs down, focus on:

  • Good insulation;
  • Positioning your greenhouse for maximum sunlight;
  • Closing it at night to lock in the warmth;
  • Using frost blankets and layering plastic;
  • Choosing cold-tolerant crops, like hardy greens and root vegetables; and
  • Creating thermal mass by filling the space with water barrels to keep temperatures more stable.

“A well-sized electric or propane heater works for more significant heating needs, but alternatives like geothermal or underfloor heating are worth considering,” says Russo. “Just skip the wood heater in structures like hoop houses with plastic—high temps and fire risks aren’t a good mix.
