Manual tape measures are invaluable tools to have on hand for quick, relatively short measurements, but when it comes to measuring longer distances accurately, nothing beats a laser tape measure. These handheld electronic devices use a laser to calculate the distance between it and the surface of which it’s reflecting, delivering a digital readout in the palm of your hand.

"A laser tape measure's range, accuracy and additional features, like backlight and memory function, could make or break your experience with it."
James Mayfield
PRESIDENT OF MAYFIELD ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING

The best laser tape measures aren’t cheap, but considering the fact that an inaccurate measurement can cause big problems down the road, these gadgets are definitely worth the investment.

  • Combines extended range with high accuracy
  • Intelligent endpiece for maximum accuracy
  • Calculates area and volume
  • No charging needed, battery-operated
  • 90-degree kickstand
  • Includes all features a pro would need and long battery life

Despite the impressive range of this Leica laser, it still delivers measurements with 1/16th of an inch accuracy and up to 330 feet in distance. Its memory function keeps the last ten measurements available, and Bluetooth technology transfers them to the Disto sketch app. This app allows you to sketch out floor plans and attach measurements. You can even upload your photos and sketch over them. Getting an accurate 3D model of our testing studio space took a few minutes. If you need to export files from the app to another program, you’ll need to sign up for a paid subscription.

This laser also features an end piece that flips out to either hook onto outside corners or extends fully to access inside corners and automatically compensates for this added length when calculating. It also includes seven measurement modes, including a Pythagoras function for indirect width and height calculations. If you need long-distance measurements for landscaping projects, warehouse planning or property size determination, this is one of the best laser levels you can buy.

It was our product testers’ favorite laser tape measure. It’s stylish, has all the functions a pro would need, and has Bluetooth connectivity with a refined app. Additionally, the Leica tape measure has a 90-degree kickstand that wraps around a corner for stability, a nice feature absent from all other models we tested. The timer is also an exclusive feature that helps avoid shakiness during use for a more accurate measurement.

Bosch Blaze GLM100-23 Laser Measure

Pros:

  • Affordable price
  • Click wheel display for easy navigation
  • Real-time measurement display
  • Very compact
  • Fits comfortably in hand and pocket
  • No charging needed, battery-operated

Cons:

  • Relatively limited range

While this laser tape measure is reliable in that a robust warranty backs it, our product testers found it may not be as user-friendly as other tape measures. The menu and navigation could be more intuitive, and our testers had to refer to the user guide frequently. If used daily, this is a great option. However, it might be frustrating for those who only use a laser tape measure occasionally, as they’d likely need to brush up on the instruction manual.

On the bright side, the tool is designed well with simple buttons and a 2-inch, easy-to-read screen. Our testers also liked the laser’s rubber grips and screw hole for tripod attachment—and the fact that it’s compact yet still provides accuracy within 1/16th of an inch, which is the industry standard.

Best Easy-to-Use

DeWalt Laser Measure DW099S with Bluetooth

Pros:

  • Easy to use
  • Interface is simple
  • Large, clear font
  • 3-year limited warranty
  • No charging needed, battery-operated
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Transfers measurements to app for long-term keeping

Cons:

  • Short battery life
  • App seems outdated
  • Doesn’t calculate triangulation

Most DIYers want reliable and, above all, easy-to-use tools around their homes. This DeWalt laser tape measure is easy to operate, has Bluetooth connectivity, and can transfer measurements for long-term safekeeping. It can even map a room!

While the screen on this option is a bit smaller, it does have a large font for readability. It also has a clear button that quickly and conveniently erases a measurement when you mess up. It’s also easy to alternate between units of measure with the touch of a button.

While our product testers appreciated the product’s simple interface and straightforwardness, they noted that the app could use some improvement. They found the app to have fewer options and an outdated design. The app could do the same basic functions as the others, but it was missing additional convenient features and required you to sign in with an account.

The black screen with white font coupled with the device’s one rubberized side button makes this tool extremely easy to use.

Our product test team recommends this 2-in-1 tool for DIYers and professionals alike. It’s especially useful for marking studs and ideal for an interior designer who wants to carry one tool instead of two.

Other Models We Tested

  • Bosch Blaze GLM50C: “I used this model while remodeling the ceiling of a Brooklyn townhouse and found its large LED digits, backlit display and straightforward controls invaluable when measuring around ceiling beams and awkward design elements,” says DIY specialist and former carpenter Alex Rennie. Our product testing team loved the GLM50C, too. The 165-foot range limit should be more than enough to handle most home DIY projects, and its compact size is convenient to stuff in your coat pocket or tool belt for easy access. This model also features Bluetooth technology, so you can quickly transfer measurements using Bosch’s project management app. Unfortunately, the GLM50C is no longer easily found in major online retail stores, but if you can manage to get your hands on it, it’s a great laser measure.
  • Kiprim Laser Distance Measure: This was the runner-up to our budget pick. Our product testing team liked its screen size, brightness, easy-to-read font, and simple and easy-to-press buttons. Like some of the other picks above, this laser measure has a bonus leveling feature that our testers found impressive compared to the bunch. While our team determined the Kiprim Laser Measure retails at an impressively low price, especially for all of its features, they ultimately felt it was too cheaply built with the all-plastic case.
  • RockSeed Laser Measure: Despite having more than 25,000 reviews on Amazon, our team didn’t love this laser measure when they tested it. They determined that it performed essential functions with accuracy, but it wasn’t their favorite in terms of design. The blue-on-white screen isn’t as visually appealing as other tape measures that made the final cut. Additionally, they found it to have a slow response time and an interface that wasn’t intuitive to use.
  • Prexiso 2-in-1 Laser Tape Measure: The Family Handyman testing team does not recommend this laser tape measure for multiple reasons. It is bulky and difficult to carry, nearly impossible to line up flat against a wall due to its shape, does not beep when a measurement is taken, and has a short battery life. However, the dealbreaker for our team was its lock button, which frequently became stuck and was difficult to move.

What to Consider When Buying a Laser Tape Measure

According to James Mayfield, president of Mayfield Environmental Engineering, functionality is a key factor to consider when choosing a laser tape measure.

“The most basic ones measure distance and calculate area and volume. Then you have models with Pythagorean mode, which can measure indirect height or width, perfect for those inaccessible or hard-to-reach places,” Mayfield says. “The device’s range, accuracy and additional features, like backlight and memory function, could make or break your experience with it.”

When choosing the best laser tape measure for your specific task, you should also consider overall durability. If you plan on using it frequently or your DIY project is especially rough, look for an option with an IP rating for dust and moisture resistance.

Are you interested in using digital project management software or sending measurements to your phone or tablet? Choose a laser with Bluetooth connectivity for transmitting measurements.

Types of Laser Tape Measures

There aren’t formal distinctions between laser tape measure types, but these are the two categories most fit into:

  • Basic: These models are on the lower end of the price spectrum, have a relatively limited range, and typically only provide simple distance measurements. “If it’s for casual DIY tasks around the house, a basic model would suffice,” Mayfield says.
  • Advanced: These options are better suited for more complex projects. They provide additional mathematical capabilities and useful features like camera viewfinders, superior accuracy and long-distance range.

How We Found the Best Laser Tape Measures

In addition to the efforts of our in-studio product testing team, who tested each of the laser tape measures listed above, we also consulted Alex Rennie, a residential and commercial carpenter in New York City. He used laser tape measures for various tasks and projects and helped us select the options for this list. We also contacted an expert in the field, President of Mayfield Environmental Engineering James Mayfield, for additional insight.

FAQ

What is the difference between a green and red laser tape measure?

While most laser tape measures use a red laser beam, there are some options with green beams. The main difference between the two colors is visibility. Since green is closer to the center of the color spectrum, it can be easier to see in bright conditions, like direct sunlight. If long-range outdoor visibility is your concern, a laser tape measure with a camera viewfinder is a more practical solution.

Are laser tape measures worth it?

Traditional tape measures definitely have their purpose in the DIY space. However, if you’re looking for something with a longer range, a laser tape measure can measure up to several hundred feet at once, which a traditional tape measure can’t do.

What are the disadvantages of laser measuring tape?

The two main disadvantages of laser tape measures are 1) their cost, which can be much more expensive than traditional tape measures, and 2) their inability to work in bright light. All of the laser tape measures we tested were difficult to see in bright lighting, which means they may not be ideal for some outdoor scenarios.

What are the benefits of a laser measuring tape?

This instant feedback saves a ton of time compared to using a traditional tape measure or tape reel, especially if you’re by yourself and measuring long distances. Plus, the digital readout eliminates any risk of you forgetting or misreading the measurements before you have a chance to write them down. We’ve found laser tape measures to be especially useful for measuring high ceilings, narrow and tight spaces and other awkward areas that flexible tape measures struggle with.

Why You Should Trust Us

Our team of expert product testers sourced, inspected and used more than 10 of the top laser tape measures on the market to provide data for this article. They tested how well each laser tape measure performed in well-lit and low-lit spaces, how long each battery lasted, how well each display screen worked and multiple other functions. Beyond general functions, our product testers also considered each product’s construction, appearance, durability and value.

If a laser tape measure had Bluetooth connectivity, our product test team used the Bluetooth function and respective app to gauge how the added technology worked. Our team took time to study and understand all the laser tape measures above, which required reading through instruction manuals and testing each model multiple times. Note: Basic distance measuring is very simple with all models tested.
