Manual tape measures are invaluable tools to have on hand for quick, relatively short measurements, but when it comes to measuring longer distances accurately, nothing beats a laser tape measure. These handheld electronic devices use a laser to calculate the distance between it and the surface of which it’s reflecting, delivering a digital readout in the palm of your hand.

It was our product testers’ favorite laser tape measure. It’s stylish, has all the functions a pro would need, and has Bluetooth connectivity with a refined app. Additionally, the Leica tape measure has a 90-degree kickstand that wraps around a corner for stability, a nice feature absent from all other models we tested. The timer is also an exclusive feature that helps avoid shakiness during use for a more accurate measurement.

The display also provides a real-time measurement readout that automatically adjusts as you move the laser. All these features are packed into a compact, easy-to-carry package and covered with a rubber over-mold housing for maximum durability.
Our team of product testers loved the compactness of this laser tape measure—it was the most compact of all the tape measures they tested. However, it is probably better for a simpler job like an at-home DIY and may not work for a contractor or pro.

If you’re looking for a solid warranty, this Milwaukee laser offers a 5-year limited warranty and a 3-year tool warranty. Our product testing team liked this model for its easy-to-access side button for measuring and memory storage of up to 30 readings. It has a 150-foot range and provides continuous real-time measurements.
While this laser tape measure is reliable in that a robust warranty backs it, our product testers found it may not be as user-friendly as other tape measures. The menu and navigation could be more intuitive, and our testers had to refer to the user guide frequently. If used daily, this is a great option. However, it might be frustrating for those who only use a laser tape measure occasionally, as they’d likely need to brush up on the instruction manual.
On the bright side, the tool is designed well with simple buttons and a 2-inch, easy-to-read screen. Our testers also liked the laser’s rubber grips and screw hole for tripod attachment—and the fact that it’s compact yet still provides accuracy within 1/16th of an inch, which is the industry standard.

While the screen on this option is a bit smaller, it does have a large font for readability. It also has a clear button that quickly and conveniently erases a measurement when you mess up. It’s also easy to alternate between units of measure with the touch of a button.
While our product testers appreciated the product’s simple interface and straightforwardness, they noted that the app could use some improvement. They found the app to have fewer options and an outdated design. The app could do the same basic functions as the others, but it was missing additional convenient features and required you to sign in with an account.

This digital laser tape measure has a nice lock button and nylon-coated tape. The flip side of the tape, which has the stud and rafter markings, makes it a great all-in-one tool for hanging drywall. While it is a simplified model, it does store the previous measurement. Additionally, the backlit LCD screen offers a clear display. The buttons on this budget pick are intuitive, and measurements convert in real time. Our product testers found the Atolla Laser Measure to be a great entry-level laser for any DIYer, beginner or pro. While this is a basic model without any frills or stylistic touches, our product testers found it functional and reliable. Plus, it fit comfortably in pockets and was easy to hold!
According to James Mayfield, president of Mayfield Environmental Engineering, functionality is a key factor to consider when choosing a laser tape measure.
“The most basic ones measure distance and calculate area and volume. Then you have models with Pythagorean mode, which can measure indirect height or width, perfect for those inaccessible or hard-to-reach places,” Mayfield says. “The device’s range, accuracy and additional features, like backlight and memory function, could make or break your experience with it.”
When choosing the best laser tape measure for your specific task, you should also consider overall durability. If you plan on using it frequently or your DIY project is especially rough, look for an option with an IP rating for dust and moisture resistance.

He used laser tape measures for various tasks and projects and helped us select the options for this list. We also contacted an expert in the field, President of Mayfield Environmental Engineering James Mayfield, for additional insight.
While most laser tape measures use a red laser beam, there are some options with green beams. The main difference between the two colors is visibility. Since green is closer to the center of the color spectrum, it can be easier to see in bright conditions, like direct sunlight. If long-range outdoor visibility is your concern, a laser tape measure with a camera viewfinder is a more practical solution.
Traditional tape measures definitely have their purpose in the DIY space. However, if you’re looking for something with a longer range, a laser tape measure can measure up to several hundred feet at once, which a traditional tape measure can’t do.
The two main disadvantages of laser tape measures are 1) their cost, which can be much more expensive than traditional tape measures, and 2) their inability to work in bright light.
