In contrast, a pergola is slatted, offering only partial coverage. Pergolas are usually installed over a garden, pathway or patio. A gazebo is a more substantial freestanding element and a gathering destination located anywhere in your yard.
You also want to take into consideration the size of the gazebo that will best fit your space. “Common gazebo sizes include eight feet, 10 feet, 12 feet or larger in diameter,” says Knapp. “You also need to consider leaving sufficient clearance around the gazebo to ensure easy access and landscaping. For your landscaping considerations, you may want to plant shrubs or install pathways around the gazebo. Allow at least four feet of clearance for that.”
