Plastic laminate countertops don’t get as much fanfare as their showier quartz and granite cousins, but these dependable workhorses of the kitchen need care, too. If you have plastic laminate countertops, you know they’re affordable, durable and easy to clean. You might also have a stain hiding under the wooden spoon holder. (I won’t tell.)

I had plastic laminate counters for years, and I’ll be honest: I did not treat or maintain them very well. When I finally decided to get new counters, the laminate was in pretty bad shape. To help you maintain yours, you don’t want my advice! Instead, I enlisted Alicia Sokolowski, founder and co-CEO of AspenClean, a brand of natural cleaning products and cleaning services. Here’s what she had to say.

Does Plastic Laminate Stain?

Yes, plastic laminate countertops do stain. While they are generally stain resistant — especially if you jump right on a spill — nothing’s stainproof. “There are certain foods that tend to stain plastic laminate if left in contact for extended periods,” Sokolowski says. Here are the primary culprits:

  • Turmeric. Known for its bright yellow color, turmeric contains a highly pigmented compound called curcumin that binds to the microscopic pores in plastic. Other strongly colored spices like chili powder and cumin can stain, too.
  • Tomatoes and tomato sauce. “The natural acids present in the sauce can cause discoloration,” Sokolowski says. Even a stray chunk of tomato could leave a mark.
  • Coffee and tea. These contain tannins, which give the daily drink staples their dark colors. Tannins have been used for thousands of years to dye leather and fabrics, so plastic laminate is vulnerable, too.
  • Berries, especially blueberries, raspberries and strawberries, Sokolowski says. Berries contain strong pigments and tannins that are released when crushed.

How to Clean Plastic Laminate Countertops

It’s easy. “For everyday cleaning, mix warm water and a few drops of mild, gentle dish soap,” Sokolowski says. “Dampen a soft microfiber cloth or sponge with the solution and wipe the surface clean.” Rinse the cloth and wipe down again to remove soapy residue, if needed. Plastic laminate counters have a wooden particle board base, which can warp over time. “To avoid this, always dry the seams thoroughly after cleaning or spills, and use a damp cloth rather than soaking the surface.”

Whether you’re cooking chili or pouring a glass of juice, be aware of spills and splatters. “Always wipe up accidental spills immediately to prevent staining or damage,” says Sokolowski. “This is especially important for liquids like coffee, tea, wine and juices.” Grab a soft kitchen sponge, microfiber cloth or damp paper towel and give your counters a quick wipe down whenever you notice a spill.

Sokolowski says gentle soap and water or cleaners with natural ingredients, like AspenClean, are safe for plastic laminate. But if you have another cleaner you’re tempted to try, or you’re at all worried about keeping your counters in tip-top shape? “We recommend checking with the manufacturer for the best cleaner for your specific countertop,” the pro adds. Better safe than sorry, especially with an expensive investment.

How to Remove Stains From Plastic Laminate Countertops

Tackling spills immediately is time-tested advice that will never steer you wrong, but let’s be real. Sometimes, those spills sit there until you can get to them, and that’s just all there is to it. That’s okay. My plastic laminate counters had a distinct tie-dye effect, and the corners of the laminate were slightly curling. And you know what? They worked just fine, thank you very much. When you get a chance to really get in there, Sokolowski has these tips:

First, make sure the cleaner is non-abrasive. Baking soda is a great choice. “If you’re trying to get rid of tough stains, you can definitely use baking soda paste,” Sokolowski says. Mix baking soda with enough warm water to make a thick paste, then “apply the paste to the stain, and let it sit for five to ten minutes,” Sokolowski says. Gently scrub with a soft cloth, then rinse and dry. Sokolowski says it’s best to use baking soda sparingly to avoid dulling the surface.

Vinegar is another great cleaner, especially if you need an extra boost. “Mix equal parts water and vinegar, apply to the stained area, and wipe the surface down with a soft cloth,” Sokolowski says. Remember to rinse the countertop thoroughly and dry it.
