Ford Recalls Over 140,000 Vehicles Due to Fire Risk
Car issues are never a breeze to deal with. Most of the time, though, car owners will have to deal with vehicle malfunctions—major and minor—every once in a while. Occasionally, the same issue seen in countless vehicles can lead to nationwide car recalls.
This was exactly the case when Ford recalled over 140,000 of its vehicles on Friday, June 2. In a statement by Ford, the company warns of the potential for fires underneath certain car hoods. Here’s what you need to know about the recall.
What Ford Vehicles Are Facing Recalls?
Around 142,500 Lincoln MKC vehicles with model years 2015-2019 are being recalled by Ford. The affected luxury SUVs are exclusively in the United States and U.S. Federal Territories.
Why Were Lincoln MKC Vehicles Recalled?
These vehicles have a battery monitor sensor—found under car hoods—which can be vulnerable to overheating and spontaneous fires. Due to the sensor’s location, if repairs are done it can be more susceptible to damage. If there is damage, it can result in overheating because of a short circuit which can cause car fires, driving or not. So far, the company has gotten 19 potentially related reports of fires that began under the hoods of vehicles, even if cars were parked and off.
How Do I Know If I Own An Affected Ford Vehicle?
To determine if your vehicle is part of the recall, consumers can easily enter their vehicle’s identification number (VIN) on this page dedicated to Ford recalls. The VIN is a 17-digit number that is typically located on the driver’s side doorjamb, the windshield—more specifically, the lower, driver’s side corner—and on the vehicle’s documentation. Documentation includes a vehicle’s registration, insurance policy, lease, promissory note, etc.
Additionally, by June 26, Ford will notify MKC owners by letter regarding their recalled vehicles. Upon arrival, the letters will contain instructions to park the vehicles outside and take them to Ford dealerships for repair.
What Should I Do If I Have a Recalled Ford Vehicle?
According to Ford, the company has not issued guidance to drivers not to drive their vehicles as Ford is unaware of any accidents or injuries related to the recall. However, Ford is advising that customers park their vehicles outdoors and away from structures.
The company is also working with dealers and retailers to supply parts and repair instructions to remedy the issue. For those who have already paid for repairs, the company will reimburse them as long as they submit a receipt by November 30. Those unable to park their vehicle outdoors should contact their local Ford retailer or Ford’s Customer Service Center at 1-833-807-3673.
